The Significance of the Troop 13 Neckerchief
Our Neckerchief
There is great significance and meaning in our Troop neckerchief. Take the time to understand its meaning and wear it proudly with the corresponding turkshead knot woggle shown below. The following in an explanation of each feature on the neckerchief:
Colors – The colors of Blue, White and Yellow represent the following:
Blue: The color associated with our Blessed Mother, Mary.
Blue & White: The colors long associated with St. Columbkille Parish/School.
Yellow & White: These are the colors associated with the Vatican City/State flag and are the colors on the lanyards for the Catholic Religious Emblems: Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII and St. George.
Troop 13 – Our Troop number has been the long standing number assigned to St. Columbkille Pack & Troop. It was requested to keep this number upon or re-charter in 2019 to keep continuity with our past and to pay tribute to our Blessed Mother, Mary who appeared to the children in Fatima on May 13th, 1917 and on the 13th of each month through October 13th, 1917.
St. Columbkille, Dubuque, IA – This information is placed on our neckerchief to show other Scouts and non-Scouts that we are chartered by the Parish of St. Columbkille in Dubuque, IA and we exist to support the mission to the youth in our parish and community.
The intertwined A&M Emblem – This has been a long standing symbol of Our Blessed Mother in the history of the Church. The intertwined A&M stand for the Latin words, Ave Maria or "Hail Mary". This is our prayer that Our Blessed Mother will always protect us from all evil and guide us closer to her Son, Jesus.
The First Class Scout Emblem: There is significant symbolism in the First Class rank. It is a combination of the Tenderfoot and Second Class ranks, and appears within the Star and Life ranks as well (superimposed over a star and a heart, respectively).
- The three point design is like the North point of the old mariner’s compass, and stand for the three parts of the Scout Oath (Duty to God & Country, Others, Self).
- Just as that compass points the way at sea, the Scout is able to point the right way in life.
- The stars are a reminder of the outdoor lifestyle, and represent two ideals…truth and knowledge.
- The fleur-de-lis: (French: “lily flower”) Spiritually, it represents an Iris, a beautiful purple bloom that symbolizes the holy Trinity. From antiquity it has been the symbol of purity and was readily adopted by the Roman Catholic Church to associate the sanctity of Mary with events of special significance.
- The eagle with the shield is a symbol of the United States…it stands for freedom, and the readiness to defend that freedom.
- The scroll at the bottom bears the Scout Motto “Be Prepared”. The ends of the scroll are turned upwards, like a smile that a Scout should have when following the Scout Slogan “Do a good turn daily.”
- The knot at the base is our reminder to “Do a good turn daily”.
This emblem represents a complete outdoors-man, a Scout who is prepared with a full set of skills and is ready to assume leadership roles and go on high adventure activities.

RSVP for Cub-A-Ree 2024
Are you ready to join in the fun of the Cub-A-Ree 2024? This year we will be participating in the Infinity Games at Swiss Valley Park on Saturday, October 19th from 12 to 4 PM. Following the Cub-A-Ree we will be camping overnight at Swiss Valley as a Pack. Please click on the following link to register to attend this year's Cub-A-Ree at the Council website and RSVP so that we can get a total count for camping. Scouts are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Avenger. Get ready for a day filled with fun and activities that will help your Scout advance in their rank. Avengers assemble!
